The Rifleman" is a TV series set in the 1880s about Lucas McCain, a Union veteran of the American Civil War who buys a ranch outside the fictitious town of North Fork, New Mexico Territory, after being a homesteader. McCain's wife had died during a smallpox epidemic, and he raised his son, Mark, on his own. The series features a recurring theme of second chances, with characters such as Marshal Micah Torrance and a former Confederate soldier being given opportunities to start anew.
